Pirelli P ZERO RUN FLAT (PZ4)
Pirelli P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are high-performance summer tires that were developed using Pirelli's Formula 1 experience. They are designed to be used as Original Equipment on select luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and MINI Clubman, and are also available in certain replacement tire sizes. These tires are specifically intended for sports car and sport coupe drivers who value both performance and convenience. With Pirelli's specialized rubber compound, these tires can provide temporary extended mobility in case of a complete loss of air pressure. It is important to note that these tires are not meant to be used in near-freezing temperatures or in snowy or icy conditions. Pirelli's warranty does not cover compound cracking that may occur when using these tires in temperatures below 45°F (7°C). The P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires feature an asymmetric tread design with a high silica content rubber compound, allowing for improved comfort, low rolling resistance, reduced noise, and resistance to hydroplaning. They have wide circumferential grooves and lateral notches to efficiently evacuate water and enhance resistance to hydroplaning during braking or high-speed driving. The internal structure of the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires consists of twin steel belts reinforced by a hybrid nylon and Kevlar ZeroDegree cap ply. The tire casing may vary depending on the desired performance of the Original Equipment application, ranging from two-ply polyester to one- or two-ply rayon, and either symmetric or asymmetric construction. This allows tire designers to fine-tune the tire's internal structure to suit the specific characteristics of the vehicle it is designed for. To enable self-supporting run-flat capabilities, the sidewalls of the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are reinforced. This allows the tires to maintain their shape and performance for up to 50 miles at speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h) in case of a loss in tire pressure. However, it is crucial for drivers to be alerted when a loss in tire pressure occurs. Thus, vehicles equipped with these tires should also have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to detect and indicate changes in tire pressure. While not classified as run-flat tires, tires labeled with MOExtended or MOE on their sidewalls exhibit similar characteristics by providing limited temporary extended mobility after a puncture causes a complete loss of air pressure. However, it is important to remember that MOExtended or MOE tires do not offer the same level of endurance in terms of speed and distance as conventional run-flat tires. Therefore, they should not be used as a substitute when a conventional run-flat tire is required. To ensure the right tire for your vehicle, consult the Original Equipment tire listing for your specific make, model, and year, or consult your vehicle owner's manual for guidance.
